The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) on Tuesday announced guidelines for online classes by schools and recommended a cap on screen time for students.

On the appropriate screen time, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ said that two online sessions of up to 45 minutes will be held each for classes 1-8, and four sessions for classes 9-12.

He said that COVID-19 pandemic has led to the closure of schools and has impacted over 240 million children of the country who are enrolled in schools.

Recommended screen time: 1) Pre Primary: On a given day for interacting with parents and guiding them,

not more than 30 minutes; 2) Classes 1 to 12: Recommended to adopt/adapt the alternative academic calendar of NCERT at http://ncert.nic.in/aac.html , 3) Classes 1 to 8: Online synchronous learning may be undertaken for not more than two sessions of 30-45 minutes each on

the days the states/UTs decide to have online classes for primary sections; 4) Classes 9 to 12: Online synchronous learning may be undertaken for not more than four sessions of 30-45 minutes

So the teachers have been informed that as per the guideline given by NCERT, each teacher should contact at least 15 students or parents in his / her classroom.

It will be necessary to give an understanding about the course coming on TV

Students will have to go home and give all kinds of guidance to give an understanding about the course coming on TV.

The circular also said that the parents of 15 new students should be contacted on the next day and a register of the guidance given to the students should be maintained. This decision has been taken by the education department under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

It is important to note that earlier an attempt was made by the Nagar Primary Education Committee to distribute one month course books to the students and not to spoil the study.

Teachers have been given special orders by the state education department. The education department has issued an order for teachers to call 15 students in their class every day to guide them on home learning.

Teachers have to maintain a register of these activities and the principal has to monitor these activities. Teachers will have to provide phone guidance with school children and their parents regarding difficulties in home learning.

Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said in Gandhinagar that curriculum for students from Class III to XII will be covered in the educational programmes that will be aired on DD Girnar. Vande Gujarat channel will also show programmes for students of Class V to XII.

The arrangement is for Gujarati medium students of government and private schools.

Secretary (primary and secondary education), Vinod Rao, told THE WEEK that an estimated 70 lakh children are expected to benefit from the 'Home Learning'. While the new academic sessions begin from June 15, Rao said the physical reopening of the schools would depend on the COVID-19 situation. Students should be prepared for longer home learning, he added.

The state government has made arrangements to deliver worksheets to students who do not have the facility of television or mobile. They will also be given text books. According to Rao, the distribution of worksheets should be over within four to five days.

The textbooks are QR-coded and the students will be able to view it through mobile. Besides, some audio visual material is also being included.

The government has also instructed all the schools in the state, regardless of the curriculum they follow, to not to take fees for three months from students.

In another development, Saurashtra University has postponed its annual examination, which was to begin from June 25. New dates will be announced later.

Teachers are now ordered to go to students' homes to make home learning effective. A circular has been issued under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

Under Home Learning, Home Learning has been introduced in the state from 15th June through Doordarshan, DD Girnar Channel, Vande Gujarat, Biogas Channels, Virtual Classroom from CCC, Telephone Contact.
